A BIT OF HISTORY
Estival Jazz was born from an idea of Jacky Marti and Andreas Wyden in the late ’70s, picking up the legacy of the Lugano Jazz Club, which in 1962 had launched the first international jazz festival in Switzerland, which took place for several seasons at the Apollo Theater in Lugano. After the first concerts in Trevano, in 1979 Marti and Wyden organized the first edition of Estival Jazz in Piazza della Riforma, expressing a philosophy that has been maintained over the years: to bring high-quality artistic concerts to Lugano and offer them for free to the public.
Starting from the very beginning, Estival Jazz has hosted internationally renowned artists in the suggestive setting of Piazza della Riforma, becoming a traditional event for the people of Lugano, Ticino, and visitors from all over Europe. Over time, Estival Jazz has expanded its artistic range, adding to its proposal of jazz music other musical genres, from rock to funk, to world music. Over the years, artists such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Keith Jarrett, Ray Charles, Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock, BB King, Friedrich Gulda, Tito Puente, Chick Corea, The Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, Gato Barbieri, Maynard Ferguson, Cesaria Evora, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Carla Bley, Barbara Hendricks, Wynton Marsalis, Cheb Mami, Noa, Oscar D’Leon, Jon Hendricks, Paco de Lucia, Van Morrison, Buddy Guy, and Taj Mahal have performed at Estival.
Starting this year, the historical event will be organized by the events and congress division of the City of Lugano, which will continue to benefit from the artistic direction of Jacky Marti, supported by Filippo Corbella. A necessary change to continue offering its loyal audience an artistically attractive program. Estival will be part of the Lugano LongLake Festival context.
